A Comparison of Car Rental Rates in the USA - Summer 2025
June 20, 2025

Bozeman, Montana is the most expensive destination in the United States to rent a car this summer, according to a survey by Cheapcarrental.com.

The survey compared rental car rates at 100 U.S. airports during the period from June to August 2025. At an average of $156 per day for the most affordable rental car, Montana's Bozeman Yellowstone leads the rankings.

Second most expensive is Anchorage's Ted Stevens Airport at $ 154 per day, while Portland, Maine completes the podium at a daily rate of $131 for the least expensive car. Also among the pricier destinations are Boston and Spokane, as well as New York City’s JFK and LaGuardia airports, with average rates well above $100 per day.

On average, across all 100 airports considered in the survey, the average daily rental rate is $73.20, a decline of more than 11% compared to 2024. The most significant drop recorded is in Baltimore, where car rental rates are just half of last year’s rates.

Rental rates have dropped significantly in other destinations too, such as Cleveland (-37%), Milwaukee (-33%), and Detroit (-25%). On the flip side, a handful of destinations saw rising rates, including Minneapolis (+37%), Palm Springs (+11%) and Des Moines. (+14%).

The least expensive destination to rent a car this summer is Tampa, at an average of only $40 per day. Also at the cheaper end of the spectrum are other Floridian destinations (Miami, Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale) – unsurprisingly as the summer months represent low season for the Sunshine State.
