A Comparison of Car Rental Rates in Europe - Summer 2026

The most expensive destination in Europe for renting a car this summer is in Norway, according to a survey by Cheapcarrental.com.
The survey examined prices across 60 European destinations during August 2026. Each destination’s main airport was used as the pick-up and drop-off point.
In Tromsø, a popular car rental destination in northern Norway, visitors will have to spend an average of €821 per week for the cheapest available rental car. Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital city, ranks as the second most expensive destination, at an average of €634 per week, while Ibiza completes the podium with an average rate of €597 for the least expensive car.
Ireland West follows 4th priciest at €532 per week, followed by Oslo and Reykjavík, where average weekly rates stand at €516 and €515, respectively. Menorca, Bordeaux, Edinburgh and Stockholm round out the top 10, with average rates ranging from €439 to €504 per week.
Compared with 2024, the last time the same survey was conducted, rental car rates have been relatively stable on average, increasing by just 0.5%. However, this average hides massive price swings across the continent, with certain destinations increasing significantly while others dropped by a lot. The biggest rate increases were recorded in Ibiza (+89%), Cardiff (+75%), and Rome (+52%), whereas the most significant price drops were seen in Alicante (-51%), Malaga (-48%), and Porto (-43%).
The following table compares car rental rates in 60 destinations across Europe this summer. The prices shown reflect the average weekly rates (7 rental days) for the most affordable rental car available between August 1 and August 31, 2026.
About the Methodology
Rates were established in late July 2026, based on the CarTrawler comparison technology. For each destination, the leading 10 international car rental companies located at the airport terminal or the airport’s official rental center were identified. Rates include all taxes and fees.
