Review: Hertz Car Rental - Reykjavik Airport

December 6, 2025

Founded in 1918 in Chicago, Hertz original started with just a small fleet of Ford Model T cars. It was sold to John D. Hertz in 1923, who rebranded it as the Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System, later expanding to become one of the best-known names in the global car rental industry. Today its Corporate headquarters are in Estero, Florida and the company has a presence in roughly 160 countries with thousands of rental locations worldwide, including airports and city centres.

Location

After landing, head through the Arrivals Hall. Hertz has its desk located inside this hall, adjacent to the customs/exit area. Once your paperwork is sorted, follow the internal route to the car rental parking area situated very near the terminal to pick up your chosen vehicle – no off-site shuttle is required.

Fleet

When hiring a car at Reykjavík Airport, Hertz provides a wide spectrum of vehicles. For budget-friendly options, economy cars like the Toyota Yaris start from around £33 per day. Stepping up in size or class, you’ll find compact SUVs such as the Dacia Duster from about £42 per day.

For premium rides, full-size SUVs like the Toyota Land Cruiser appear from roughly $58 per day. As always, actual rates depend heavily on travel dates, availability and vehicle type.

Insurance and Deposit

When renting with Hertz at Reykjavík Airport, Limited Supplier Insurance is included, covering bodywork damage and theft but not keys, tyres, glass, the windshield or the undercarriage. A refundable security deposit of roughly $1,840 is placed as a temporary hold on the driver’s credit card and released when the car is returned without missing fuel, fines or damage.

The damage and theft excess is also about $1,840, which is the maximum you’d pay if the vehicle is damaged or stolen. Hertz requires a physical credit card in the lead driver’s full name; virtual cards and mobile-wallet payments aren’t accepted, and debit cards are generally not allowed. A fuel deposit may also be blocked on the credit card to ensure the agreed fuel policy is followed.

Value for money is 7.4, with the pick-up process rated 7.2 and the drop-off process a stronger 8.0, suggesting a smoother end-of-rental experience. Average waiting times come in at 18 minutes, which is reasonable for a busy airport location.
