Review: Avis Car Rental - Bordeaux Airport
Avis was founded way back in 1946 by Warren Avis at Willow Run Airport in Detroit. It was one of the first rental companies to focus strongly on airport locations, giving travelers the convenience of picking up cars immediately after arrival – something many competitors didn’t prioritise at the time. Nowadays, Avis is headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey and operates in over 165 countries, with more than 11,000 rental locations worldwide.
Location
The Avis rental desk at Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport can be found directly opposite the terminals on the rental car park - all you do is follow the “parking loueurs” signage after the Express parking area and you should spot it. Once you've sorted your paperwork at the counter, you walk a short distance to the on-site car park to collect your vehicle. There's no separate shuttle service needed for pick-up, as the desk and cars are on the airport grounds and easily walkable.
Fleet
When it comes to choice of cars at Bordeaux Airport, Avis have pretty much every price point and vehicle style covered. At the cheaper end of the scale, they offer small cars such as a Renault Clio with rates starting at around $28 per day. If you're willing to up the budget, you can get larger cars including standard SUVS, as well as premium models like the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid or BMW X4. For the former, you might expect to pay around $56 per day, and for the latter potentially a fair bit higher. Needless to say, rates vary widely depending on season, availability and demand.

Insurance and Deposit
When booking with Avis at Bordeaux Airport, some rentals don’t automatically include theft or damage cover, so travelers using credit card insurance should bring proof that it applies in France and covers rental cars. If not, Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) can be purchased at the desk.
Avis places a refundable deposit of about $2,480 on the lead driver’s credit card, which is then released once the car is returned without damage or theft. A physical card in the driver’s name is required, although debit cards are accepted under certain conditions. A small fuel deposit might also be held until the car is returned with the agreed fuel level.
Client Reviews
According to verified data,, Avis have an average customer feedback rating of 7.9 out of 10 – meaning most clients have a generally positive experience, but perhaps with room for improvement. Breaking that score down reveals a bit more about where they excel and where they could do better. The company scores 8.0 for service at the rental desk and 8.4 for vehicle cleanliness, suggesting a well-maintained fleet and professional staff. Overall value for money is rated 7.1 – the lowest score across all categories, and perhaps indicating higher rates than expected – while both the car pick-up and drop-off processes earn 8.2, indicating smooth and reliable operations. Average waiting times at the rental desk are just 14 minutes, which would seem pretty speedy for a busy airport.
