A comparison of car rental rates in the USA - Summer 2023

Madison, WI is the most expensive city in the United States to rent a car this summer, a new survey has revealed.
The survey by Cheapcarrental.net compared rental rates at 100 U.S. airports for August 2023. Based on the results, Madison leads the ranking as the most expensive destination at an average of $702 per week for the cheapest rental car. Anchorage, AL ranks second-most expensive, with rates starting at $698 per week, while Spokane, WA rounds out the top three at $681 per week.
According to the survey, rental rates in 2023 have dropped by about 5% compared to a year ago. In San Francisco and San Diego, rates have fallen by more than 30%, and in Honolulu by over 40%. Among the cheapest destinations is Palm Beach, at just $226 per week.
At the other end of the spectrum, several destinations have become substantially more expensive. In Reno, renters will have to spend $578 for the least expensive car – a hike of over 50% compared to summer 2022. Similar increases are seen in Grand Rapids, MI (+44%), Birmingham, AL (+42%), and Cleveland, OH (+37%).
The following table compares car rental rates of 100 destinations in the USA this spring. Prices shown reflect average weekly rates (Sunday to Saturday) for the cheapest rental car for the period August 1-31st, 2023. Only rental car companies situated directly at a destination's airport or at the airport's respective rental car center were taken into account for the survey.
