Survey
A comparison of car rental rates in Europe - Summer 2024
August 7, 2024

The most expensive destination in Europe for renting a car this summer is in Norway, according to a survey by Cheapcarrental.com.

The survey looked into prices across 60 European destinations during August 2024. Each destination’s main airport was assigned as the pick-up and drop-off point.

In the city of Tromso, a popular car rental destination in northern Norway, visitors will have to spend an average of €658 euros per week for the cheapest available rental car. Ireland West Airport Knock is the second most expensive destination with an average rate of €634 euros per week, while Cagliari, the capital city of the Italian island of Sardinia, completes the podium with an average rate of €525 euros for the least expensive car.

At the other cheaper end of the spectrum, Malta comes out as the least expensive destination for renting a car in Europe with a weekly rental rate of just €143 euros. Also comparatively affordable are rental cars at London Heathrow, Rome Fiumicino, and Tenerife airports, where at all three locations visitors should find a car for below €200 euros per week.

Compared to 2019, the last time the same survey was conducted, rental car rates have increased by about 30%, on average. In Spain and France, rates have increased by more than 40%, while in Italy they are up by a more moderate 24%. In the UK and Ireland, rental car rates have increased by 32% and 27%, respectively.
